What the heck - we wanted to make a journey of it and we had never driven across the Nullarbor!
This was the plan:
- We were in a hurry so we wanted to make the journey in 3 days.
- We wanted to drive a s much as possible and sleep in accommodation for only two nights.
- Catch the Ferry from Melbourne to Burnie and drive to Hobart.
- We left on the 16th September 2012.
The journey took 3 days and 2 nights [we stayed in accommodation]. The fuel cost us $672.70 and accommodation cost us a total of $220. The ferry including the car cost an additional $350 or so I think. We only stopped when we needed petrol/food. From Perth to Hobart we covered more than 3500 kilometres and bear in mind we did not wander from the planned route. We did not have a trailer.
Day 1: Perth to SA boarder.
We packed up the Suzuki Grand Vitara [4 cylinder petrol] the night before we left. Then on Saturday morning at 0430 we were on the read and heading to the WA/SA boarder. The roads were clear of animals and we only saw a few emus and kangaroos along the way. It was dark by the time we got the boarder and were actually driving in the dark for well over an hour. During that time we did see most of the animals and we slowed down to be safe. To avoid boredom we were listen to a book on CD. We stayed at the Boarder Hotel and it cost us $120. the room was quite good and we enjoyed the hot shower.
Day 2: SA boarder to Mount Barker SA.
We got up early grabbed some breakfast and hit the road. We drove through SA to Mount Barker and stayed at a caravan park with unit accommodation. The roads were quite good and rarely had to pass other vehicles.
Day 3: Mount Barker SA to Victoria.
We got up early then drove all the way to the wharf area to catch the ferry to Tasmania. We arrived at about 3:00PM so we had plenty of time to relax before driving onto the ferry.
The ferry travel at night and in the morning were able drive off and make our way to Hobart.
Well I didn't go into too much detail but if you want some additional information send me a message.
